Zoo Trip - Enclosures

Hi Kea Class,

Your task is to comment on our Zoo trip.

We are focusing on animal enclosures.

1/ Name the animal you plan to design an enclosure for.

2/ Explain in detail an enclosure you saw at the Wellington Zoo (This can be an enclosure for any animal)

Remember to include any 'enrichment' activities you might have seen.

3/ Explain your ideas for an enclosure design
Questions to consider:

What does the animal need to survive?
Any special features?
Food and Water dishes?
Toys?
Comfort?
Shelter?
What animals can live happily together?
What materials will the enclosure be made of?
What features does your enclosure have to stop the animals escaping?

Good Luck,

Mr Douglas.

  2. I will design a enclosure for a red panda.
At the zoo I saw the Flying Foxes enclosure. It
was dark in it and there were lots of trees in it too. There was fruit in bowls wich were tied to branches. My enclosure will be a big metal cage with lots of tees in it. For food I will put in bamboo and some other foods too. I will alsow hang up ropes for enrichment.

  3. Hi Kea,

I am making a stable for a horse.
A horse neeeds water, hay, apples and carrots to survive.
It will also need warm blankets in the winter.
Only one horse can live in a stable at a time.
Straw, wood shavings and shredded paper make good bedding and should be placed on the floor of the stable.
Three of the walls are closed in completely and the other is a gate (not so high that the horse can jump over) so that they can't escape. There is also a roof.
Stables are usually made of wood, but I am going to mae mine out of card. The roof is usually made out of metal, but again I will make mine out of card.

I am going to describe the Monkey Island that we saw at Wellington Zoo.

There were trees, tyres and ropes to make it look like their original habitat.
Water surrounds the island so that they can't escape, as they don't like water.
They have a house round the side which is where they sleep and where the zookeepers get onto the island.
They need fruit and water to survive.
    They shelter in their house.

  4. Hi Kea class!!

My animal that I want to design an enclosure for is a giraffe. The giraffe enclosure has rocks, sticks, a little hut, a big building for them to sleep in, a hill, and lots of space for them to exercise.

My ideas for designing an enclosure for a giraffe are, there will be more than one giraffe so the giraffes wont get lonely, a separate food and water bowl for each giraffe, plenty of space for them to exercise and a big fence so the giraffes can't get out.

  5. Hi kea class,
I am doing mine on polat bears artic snow encloure.

    A polar bear needs.............
    Icey water to swim in
Food to eat such as meat
Icey encloure because it lives in ice in the wild.

A polar bear can be with lots of polar bears were they are but don't put anther artic animal with it because that animal will not stay alive for long because it eats what it sees that is not a polar bear.

There needs to be a tall gate so the polar bears can not get over it. There is notr going to be a roof because the polar bear needs air.
There needs to be lots of space so the polar bears can move around.
With the ice and the icey water they need to be close to gether so the polar bears to feel out of there habit.
The fence needs to be made strong like made out of steel of wood so it is strong.

I am going to make snow out of 2 materails 1 of them is going to be fake snow and my 2nd one is going to be made of tussie paper so it is soft like snow.
My icey water is going to be made of blue material and maybe some blue paper or tussie paper.

I am going to dessribe the monkey encloure witch is called at wellington zoo monkey island.

The monkey island was a small island with water around so the monkeys can not get out and run away because they don't like the water.
The monkeys had big tree stumps with ropes on it so the monkeys can go on them and swing and hang from the ropes. The island had lots of grass and plants so they can eat the grass. The monkeys are feed everyday three times daily witch is 5 times less then a humman.
The monkeys eat fruit and veg such as pinaple, apples, oranges and lots of other fruit amnd veg.
They shelter is a monkey house witch they sleep in.

    See u guys tomorrow

In the monkey enclosure is a moat, ropes, trees, water, shelter, food.
My vampire squid enclosure has high pressure salt water in a dark room, very thik glass, its very quiet, and a refrigeration unit. People need night goggles to see the vampire squid.

  11. Hi Kea Class,

I'm doing my enclosures on a wombat.
A wombat needs grass, a little hut to stay warm, dry and to sleep.

I'm doing my description on the monkey island.
There are trees, ropes water so they can't get out because the can not swim.
They have a house to sleep in and that has ropes and all that.
They eat rice and fruit the zookeepers feed the to them three or four times a day.

Thanks to the teachers for tacking us I really enjoyed it thanks.

    See you tomorrow kea.

  13. Hi Kea Class

I will design a enclosure for my animal (goldfish).

I enjoyed the monkeys at monkey island most. In
the enclosure there was a climbing frame,
ropes, heated hut (also entry to island-
zookeepers only), trees, moat to prevent them
from escaping, grass, a table, tunnels, logs and tires

In my enclosure (tank) I will have seaweed, water (if possible), pretend air pump and pretend filter.

  15. Hi Kea class
I'm designing an enclosure for a cheetah.
It will be a large enclosure so it can get lots of exercise.
It will have a tall wire fence to stop it escaping with barbed wire hanging diagnolly inside for extra saftey.
It will be on a slight hill.
It will have daily exercise and for enrichment it will have balls to chase around.
On the ground there will be a few square metres of gravel and the rest of it grass.
It will have one big log on its side with big branches sticking out.
It will have an inside room with a roof for when its raining(also with a wire fence.)
There will be two cheetahs in the enclosure.
There will also be scratching posts for the cheetahs.
There will be a pond so that the cheetahs can drink, and they will be fed three times a day with raw meat.
The enclosure will have baby trees and bushes.
I am going to describe the cheetah enclosure
    It has trees,logs,bushes,posts with rope,small trees,grass.
